Who We Are We
are more than 6800 Knights in the 62 Councils that comprise the 14
counties in the Roman Catholic Diocese of
Albany. The Knights
of Columbus is a Catholic men's fraternal benefit society that was founded in
1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut. Its purpose is to
render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance
are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and
intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through
educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief
works. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability
through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has
contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. How to Join Membership in the Knights is open to practical Catholic men in union with the Holy See who are 18 years of age or older. A practical Catholic is one who lives according to the Commandments of God and the Precepts of the Church. There is no requirement that members purchase insurance. However, the K of C Insurance program is one of the highest rated and is a cost-effective insurance program for a member who wants insurance to protect his family. There are four degrees within the Knights of Columbus. Each degree ceremony imparts a lesson on the Order's core virtues of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The
easiest way to join is to contact a member or one of the officers of a Council
in your area. Click on the Council page to see a list of the Councils. Another
way is to ask the Pastor of your parish. He can usually provide you with the
name and contact information of a local Knight. Finally, if none of those
avenues are available, send a note to the Chairman
of the Board of District Deputies who will put you in contact with an
officer from a Council in your area.
